Swimming pools are a common outdoor feature to many homes today. They offer homeowners the opportunity for recreation and relaxation with family and friends. However, swimming pools can be a safety issue and need to be monitored correctly to prevent possible drowning situations. Swimming pool fences have proven to be an effective means of protection against drowning.

These protective barriers should be installed at a location that eliminates any free access to the pool. The gate to the fence should only be used to gain access to the swimming pool and for no other reason. It should not be used to gain access to any other part of the yard.

Swimming pool fences should be made from a see through mesh material that is hung over poles made from aluminum. The bottom of the fencing material should sit next to the deck and prevent anyone from being able to get under it. The tension of the fence holds it properly in place and should be checked regularly.

Gates that close and lock automatically are the best protection as they prevent any chance of danger should someone forget to close or lock the fence. The gate should always open out and away from the swimming pool. These gates can rust and wear over time and should also be checked regularly to ensure that they are operating properly.

Swimming pool fences range in height from 3.5 feet to 5 feet. The higher the fence, the more protection provided and for a longer amount of time. Small children will outgrow a fence that is 3.5 feet high before one that is 5 feet high. The fence poles should provide the necessary tension to support the mesh. More support is provided when the poles are installed with a small distance between them. The standard distance required between support poles is 30 inches. The mesh fencing should be made from vinyl coated polyester. All sides of swimming pool fences should also be finished with a vinyl border.
